Hatshepsut - Philadelphia

Here we have a lintel from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

Formerly this lintel would have had 4 cartouches. The two to the left of the lintel are those of Hatshepsut (now erased) and the two on the right (still visible) are those of Thutmose III.

The caption under the photo by Hans Ollermann states the "find spot" to be the Ramesseum. I will have to look out for more information on this.

For a translation of the hieroglyphs, see: nilemuse.com

  1. It's strange : on the right and on the left, the first title is the Horus name of Thutmose III, "Ka-nakht Heka-Waset". I don't see tracks of hammering on the left side, where the Horus name of Hatshepsut ("Wseret-kaou") would be written. I hope find an other picture to see if the Horus name of Hatshepsut is erased under the name of her co-regent.

  2. Hi Alice,

The link i posted gives a suggestion for the missing Hatshepsut names. They suggest the nomen and praenomen of Hatshepsut, due to the mirror imaging of the reliefs.

The area of the Hatshepsut cartouches may have been smoothed over, which happened to other inscriptions. This may be why tool marks are not visible.

Let me know if you find a better photo.

    Stuart

  4. Hi Stuart !

The three inscriptions on the left side originaly mention the Hatshepsut's name (Horus name and the two cartouches of the Queen). The tool marks are visible for the cartouches (never rewritten), but not for the Horus name. I also suppose that the Hatshepsut's Horus name was completely erased before engraving the name of Thutmose III, but no traces of hammering are visible and it's strange : logically, the inscription would be on the same level than the rest of the Hatshepsut's cartouches, but here, I get the impression the Horus name on the left side of the inscription is on the same level than the Thutmose III names of the right side, and it's stange.

  5. Hi Alice.

In order to get the cleareast information we will need to obtain an high resolution copy of the photograph, or even contact the Penn Museum.

So far- i've located a number of low resolution pictures only. I will let you know how i get on.

  6. Alice - I've been able to study the photo more closely. I understand what you are saying regarding the 3rd (Horus) name. It is almost as if the lintel was either altered very well, leaving little (or no) marking- OR (the more unlikely) is that the lintel never included Hatshepsut's Horus name. Very unlikely.

I will keep an eye out for further photos/ information.

  7. Additional:

Hatshepsut - From Queen to Pharaoh (p283) describes the lintel, but there are no issues raised regarding the area being discussed (2nd register).
